SURFACE PREP:

  1. Prior to application, prepare surface by removing any contaminants such as mildew, dirt, oil and grease. Mold Armor Deck Wash (link) is an excellent choice — the hose-end sprayer makes cleaning fast and easy while providing superior results.  Follow cleaner product manufacturer’s instructions.
  2. For severely weathered wood, or wood previously treated with a sealer, use a pressure washer to strip away the top layer.
  3. Allow the surface to dry after cleaning until there is no standing water and the surface is not visibly wet. This is usually about one to two hours, depending on climate conditions.

APPLICATION:

  1. Stir or shake well. Pour some into a roller pan or pump-up sprayer. Replace the cap and shake again and pour remaining product into pan or sprayer. Intermix multiple cans to ensure even color.
  2. Apply using a synthetic paintbrush, paint roller or deck pad. Apply evenly, coating the length of the board in the direction of the wood grain. Maintain a wet edge by working small areas at a time to prevent lap marks. Do not allow sealer to pool on surface. If using a pump-up sprayer, always back brush for best results. One coat will provide sufficient protection.
  3. Allow to dry 4-8 hours before walking on the surface. Dry time may vary due to temperature, humidity and surface porosity.

DRY TIMES

Allow 3 days after waterproofing before painting with an oil-based paint.

HELPFUL TIPS:

This product is intended for exterior surfaces only. Prior to using this product, you should always read the entire label including all cautions.

Allow new pressure treated wood to weather for at least 30 days before applying sealer.

Do not mix with any other products.

Do not apply over previously painted or stained surfaces unless old finish is removed or completely weathered away.

Surface and air temperature should be above 50°F during application and drying. Do not use when rain is expected within 8 hours.

Test in an inconspicuous area to ensure you are satisfied with the appearance, as the color will vary depending on surface type and age.

Avoid contact with surfaces not intended to be treated. Cover adjacent surfaces with plastic before applying sealer. To avoid overspray when using a pump-up sprayer, spray the deck floor and inside of railings first. Then either brush the outside of rails, or cover the deck floor and spray the outside of rails.

For even color, don’t stop once you start applying.

CLEAN-UP: Clean equipment and any overspray immediately with soap and water. Dried product can be removed with mineral spirits.

STORAGE: Do not store below 40°F. Do not allow product to freeze.

Why should I protect my wood?
While we all love the outdoors, unprotected wood doesn’t. Weather is her enemy! And not just severe weather, like thunderstorms and snow and ice. The sun can cause just as much damage as water can. Unprotected wood is like a sponge during a rainstorm. The water seeps into the porous grains, causing swelling. Yes, the wood will dry, but once that swelling/drying cycle begins, the wood is open to damage, like cracking and warping. Have you ever walked on wooden decking with uneven planks? The carpenter probably didn’t build it that way. Most likely, those planks weren’t protected after construction and that unevenness occurred from weather. With water, comes the threat of mold and mildew. If left unprotected, wood can become black in places, leaving the overall surface looking blotchy and unattractive. Finally, as much as we all love the sun’s rays, wood doesn’t want to get a tan. In fact, the sun will actually cause the wood to fade; darker colored woods will lighten and lighter colored woods will turn gray.

My wood is pressure treated, so it’s okay, right?
Sorry, but no, it’s not! Pressure-treated means that the wood is chemically coated to prevent insect damage and wood rot. It is not waterproofed. In fact, during the process of pressure treating, the wood becomes even drier than untreated wood, opening the door for more and quicker water absorption. Also, most pre-treated lumber is not mold and mildew resistant, however, some do contain a mold inhibitor. If you see black spots on the wood in the store, you’re probably looking at the beginning of mold.

How old should my wood be before I protect it?
Remember the idiom “A day late and a dollar short”? Well, it’s never too early to protect your wood. If you wait too many years, though, damage from Mother Nature could cost you money in repairs. It’s always better to protect your wood in its early life. If your wood is new or pressure-treated, however, it’s best to allow it to weather for about 30 days before starting your cleaning and sealing project.

Okay, you’ve told me that regardless of whether my wood is unprotected or pressure treated, it needs protection. And it needs protection early in its life. Where do I start?
Like most things in life, if you start with a good foundation, you get good results. This is true with wood projects. Regardless of whether your wood is old, new and bare, or new and pressure-treated, it should be cleaned to ensure a successful application of the protective coating. New wood can have dirt and other contaminants that might prevent good penetration of a sealer. Use Mold Armor® E-Z Deck Wash to clean and restore the natural color and beauty to weathered wood. It’s easy because there’s no scrubbing. E-Z Deck Wash contains special buffered renewing agents that will brighten wood surfaces within 10 minutes and restore it to a natural weathered look. Also, if your wood appears to have mold, E-Z Deck Wash cleans mold stains and removes mildew, algae and fungus stains from your wood decks, siding and fences.

Should I protect my fence and wood furniture? I don’t walk on them so surely they don’t get a lot abuse, right?
Wood gets abused, whether it’s a vertical surface or a horizontal one. And chairs, especially those expensive Adirondack ones? They have surfaces at all the right angles for weather to damage them; don’t forget that sun can cause as much damage as rain. The best rule of thumb is to protect all your exterior surfaces!

How can I prevent mold and mildew from growing on my deck or fence?
Great question! Mold and mildew spores grow naturally but who wants to look at it? Home Armor™ Multi-Surface Armor™, Home Armor™ Wood Armor® Waterproofer Plus or Home Armor™ Wood Armor® Endurance Wood Protector are the only waterproofing sealers formulated with Microban®, a revolutionary antimicrobial ingredient that protects the dried finish from mold and mildew. But before you use them, you first need to remove all traces of mold with a good exterior cleaner, like Mold Armor® E-Z Deck Wash. You will still need to reapply the Home Armor™ products as recommended on their labels.

How do I know if my finish is working? Can I be sure it’s protecting the surface?
Glad you asked! There actually is a way and it’s so easy. Once your surface is dry, according to the label, splash or drop some water on the surface. If the water forms beads and is not absorbed into the wood, it’s protected.

How do I know if my wood needs protecting?
As we’ve stated, all wood, regardless of age, needs protecting. You may not know, however, if your wood has already been protected. You could have just purchased a house with an existing deck or purchased second-hand wood furniture. If you pour some water on the surface and the color darkens and the water is absorbed, it means the surface needs to be protected. We like to call it the “splash test”. If the water puddles together or forms beads, then the surface is protected.

Is there a “best” time of year to do my project?
No, but the outside temperature is important to consider when doing a project with Home Armor™ products. All of the Home Armor™ products should only be applied if the temperature is above 50° F. Also, it shouldn’t be raining or have rained in at least 8 hours priors to starting your project. If you are going to use a sprayer, you might want to pick a day where the wind is calm too. We suggest picking a nice, sunny day and enjoy being outside!

What advantages do I have in using Home Armor™ waterproofers for my project versus other products out there?
Wow, where do we start? Our products are the only waterproofing products containing Microban®, a revolutionary antimicrobial ingredient that protects the dried finish from mold and mildew. Our product goes on milky white so you can see where you’ve applied and it only needs one application. Home Armor™ products are easy soap and water clean-up. They are environmentally safer than other products. And, finally, Home Armor products™ can be applied the same day after cleaning the surface. That makes for an overall shorter project time.
